Most universities, schools, and departments have TOEFL requirements for total scores, and many programs also stipulate minimum sectional score benchmarks. These TOEFL standards are dictated by a number of factors, such as institutional selectivity, subject-matter emphasis, and type of admission. Minimum TOEFL scores may be set by individual departments or even specific degree programs, and it is therefore important for applicants to review all TOEFL information on university websites (students must not assume that the TOEFL scores required by a university division are the same as those expected by a university department). Passing TOEFL scores can be as low as 60 at schools that are not particularly selective, and some of these institutions will grant provisional admission to applicants with even lower scores. However, most selective programs expect TOEFL total scores of at least 90, and more commonly 100 (sometimes with at least 25 on each TOEFL section). Manhattan Review has helped students meet every type of TOEFL requirement, no matter how rigorous.
